EV Charging Stations- Various considerations before buying them

You may have perhaps recently purchased a plug-in hybrid or an electric vehicle. Whatever be it, you will require a home charger point to charge your electric car. But before investing in a charging station, consider a few points.

Usage type

  • Tethered (Stationary): You must know where, how, and when to use the charging station. Tethered types are stationary charging stations that require professional installation. Its technical parameters are similar to those of mobile wall boxes. The electrician will evaluate if it is possible to accommodate a wall box in the home network connection. The government offers financial support to such owners.

  • Untethered (Mobile): You may travel constantly and need to charge your EV. In such cases, mobile charging stations are excellent choices. Untethered types have a plug rather than a connection cable. Plug it via an adapter or into the red CEE socket to the household socket. Professional assistance is not essential for its installation.

Assess power panel abilities

Unfortunately, every home panel comes with some limitations. Hence, check its capitalization first as it determines the kind of EV charging station type to buy. Ensure having sufficient current. Based on the variant, some charges consume 6-32 amps. But you might be using other appliances that also require amps. Ensure your fuse box has sufficient space. Otherwise, consider additional points.

EV plug type

Usually, EVs have type 1 or 2 charging sockets. Type 2 plug or socket is present in most charging stations. Modern electric cars use this type commonly. If your EV’s charging port is type 1, you may invest in a type-1 or type-2 adapter. You may use it with your charger. Check out the charging socket’s shape since it specifies the plug type your EV has.

Wallbox charging speed

Usually, chargers come with a charging speed limit, irrespective of the type you buy. Auto charging points in Delhi offer 20-30 minute rapid charging facilities. However, it is not possible to install such ultra-fast chargers at your home. You may consider an 11kW or 22kW charging station for your home. Take into account your car’s charging speed if it is limited.

Location to install the charging station

Consider the location to install the new wall box since EV chargers come in different sizes and shapes. The perfect location is rather determined by the car’s rear port location. If at the front, identify a location where the car can be parked directly before the charger. Invest in a cable of any length desired. However, cable length will determine its cost.

Buy wisely

Since it is the first time you are buying an EV charging station, do take into consideration the above aspects. It will ensure peace of mind and derive value worth your investment.
